Commando? I believe most of us recognize and know what this term means but if you don’t, this is the definition from the Urban Dictionary: “Not wearing any underwear.”
When I wear board shorts I like to go commando. I know why I do and I know what the benefits and draw backs are, which I will go into details later in this post, but are there any medical benefits.
Possible Medical Benefits
Men’s Fitness published the following: “… According to research published in the Scottish Medical Journal, wearing kilts “regimental style” (aka without underwear underneath them) keeps the testicles at an ideal temperature for sperm production and quality.”
In a blog written by Taryn Hillin she write the following: ““Go for it if you dare,” said Dweck (Alyssa Dweck, a gynecologist and co-author of the book V is for Vagina), “Nothing wrong with going commando at any time.” In fact, some gynecologists recommend sleeping in the nude, allowing the vagina to air out at night as part of practicing good vaginal health.”
Why I Go Commando and My Horror Story
I choose to go commando when I wear board shorts because underwear would interfere with the fast drying qualities inherent in board shorts, I don’t want any riding up, I don’t want to feel waterlogged (the underwear will soak up water) and it just doesn’t look right.
I feel that if you wear underwear with board shorts you lessen the short’s: fast drying properties, stretch and flexibility and overall light and airy feeling.
Now because I don’t wear underwear with my board shorts, I have gotten rash on my private and other parts during a long surf session. Something that may have been mitigated if I had been wearing underwear. I’ve had my shorts almost washed off.
I’ve also, to my horror, have experienced several large rips in the posterior section of the shorts during several surf sessions. One of the rips I discovered while stand-up surfing. When you stand-up surf you are standing up at all times.
Imagine standing up, with a large rip in the back of your shorts and exposing the entire line-up to what I would term an unpleasant scene. Now if I had been wearing underwear that embarasssing moment could have been lessened.
The other rip was discovered after a surf session. I was standing in line at a local eatery and I felt a unusual draft. I’m thinking, “Oh, no, not again!”, I reach behind and to my dismay and horror I once again have a large rip in my shorts and I’m exposing my backside to the world. Once again, this embarassing moment could have been lessened if I had been wearing underwear.
Now, even though I’ve experienced rash, almost lost my shorts and had some very embarrassing moments I still go commando when wearing board shorts and I just consider the things that happened to me the price of fully experiencing the inherent properties of the board short.
It is all a matter of personal choice. There is no right or wrong about going commando or wearing underwear.
