Investing in a surfboard locking system is crucial if you wish to protect your board from theft. Unfortunately, in this day and age, you can’t leave your surfboard unattended on your vehicle without the fear that it may be stolen.
I purchased the Thule 810 SUP Taxi Paddleboard Carrier a year ago and decided to write a review about my experiences with it so far. In this Thule 810 SUP Taxi Paddleboard Carrier Review, I will discuss how well it works, how durable it is, some minor drawbacks with it, and where to get the best deals when you buy it online. By the end of this review, you should have a good idea as to whether the Thule 810 SUP Taxi Paddleboard Carrier is right for you.
How It Works
The Thule 810 SUP Taxi Paddleboard Carrier is a surfboard locking system that locks to the crossbar on a vehicle’s rack. It has a cushion surface to help protect your board against damage and is width adjustable. The Thule Carrier also has a lockable strap system to prevent board theft. Of course, the claims made by this product seems very impressive. But does it actually work as advertised? The rest of this review will be devoted to my experiences with using this product.
Installation was straightforward and easy, especially with the detailed instructions. I noticed immediately that this is a very well made product. It is easy to place and lock my surfboard in the carrier and is just as easy to unlock and remove the board.
I thought the Thule carrier was well designed and pleasing to the eye. The Thule carrier also fit the factory installed roof rack on my Nissan Frontier.
The Thule carrier added an additional 8 – 10 inches to the highest point of my truck rack. This became a problem, because I feared hitting the fire sprinkler pipes located in the parking garage where I store my truck.
What Others Think
“This is by far the best rack mounts I have to date. So simple, completely bomber secure and lockable. I drove from SoCal to NorCal with my new board driving 80mph, didn’t flinch. Also, nice to be able to get out of water and not have to rush home since the system is lockable and has a stainless steel cable inside the straps making it extremely difficult to cut. Couldn’t be more satisfied…”
“Absolutely perfect rack for paddleboards, very easy and quick to use. Holds very well at highways speeds.”
“My plan was to transport both my paddle board or my surfboards. I’ve just discovered that I CANNOT use this expensive rack for my 6’2″ and 6’8″ surfboards because the rack cradles do not pinch together enough, and no matter how tight I get the straps, it does not come anywhere near tight enough for transport. Mind you that my boards are in a bag, yet it too low profile for adequate installation.”
“It’s works, but beware of your vehicle. If you have tilted cross bars this will not work for you!”
“Took the paddle boards 1300 miles and they did not move. Don’t crank down too hard on the straps though, I put dens in our boards.”
“We drove 14 hours yesterday at 75 miles per hour on the highway and the carrier held up amazingly. Limited movement and I was shocked how quiet it was carrying two boards on the highway. Our average MPG was reduced by about 8 due to carrying the two boards at such a speed but that was to be expected. The taxi came with four locks. Two that lock carrier to cross bars and two that lock straps that prevent someone from being able to get boards out. Boards were left on car overnight in city for two days and were fine. We are extremely happy with our purchase and would highly recommend this taxi.”
“This rack will NOT hold your board down if you are on the highway. I got two extra straps and run one thought the front door and one through the back door of my CRV. Please, please secure your boards with extra straps!”
Pros and Cons
- Very well made and designed
- Easy to install
- Easy to use
- Stable at highway speeds
- May not fit all surfboards
- Requires a crossbar on a rack to install
If you are looking for very well made and designed locking surfboard carrier that will lock not only on your vehicles racks but will also lock your board, then look no further. The Thule 810 SUP Taxi Paddleboard Carrier will secure your surfboard and remove the fear of it being stolen.
